There comes a time in every man's life when he must own up to his past. And my time has come. I am admitting to my past love for The Power Rangers. Yep, that's right. This week's Throwback Thursday reintroduces the shenanigans of The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.
Now, I'm not referring to the many spin offs. There have been like 55, ranging from the Rangers that race to the rangers that do magic to rangers that work the corners in Jersey Shore. I'm talking about the original show. 1993-996. From third through 6th grade I spent a majority of my time tuning into a show that allowed grown ups to prance around in colored leotards fighting goon after goon. There special effect consisted of toys in stop animation. And their stars were as corny as the sky is blue.
But I loved every second of it. This was back in the days when every episode of a show had a moral lesson. Jason (the red ranger), Billy (the nerd blue ranger), Kimberly (the hot pink rangers) ,Trini (the asian yellow ranger) and Zack (the black black ranger). Color-Racism aside for the later 2, I believe Kimberly was my first real crush. And the premise, 5 normal kids, who all just happened to know karate, are picked by Zordon (the Hologram Man from space) to protect the Earth from the evil Rita Repulsa and Lord Zed. Each Power Ranger had their own prehistoric animal Zord (education) and they all came together at the end of ever show to form the Mega Zord, which ultimately defeated the bad guy. Skull and Bulk where the two goofy idiot side characters (a necessary in 90s tv). And the plot developed and developed from there. Deeper and deeper. Spark flew, characters were added and I purchase Power Ranger paraphernalia for 3 yrs straight.
And this went on until the firts movie. Power Rangers Return of the Ooz. Inwhich they became Ninja Zords. Brought that toy megzord toy immeadialty. And within the giving up of $40, realized that I would never watch anopther episode of Power Rangers again. And that was the end of it all.
Now, all you cool kids out there may want to act like you've never seen an episode. But from what I remember...EVERYONE loved that show. So....stay high on you little pedestal, but if you know thet Pink Rangers fighting stance by heart, and can do it....this is a Throwback for you.
Holler Zordon. Daps.
P.S. Though I loved the show...I hope every knows that it is a complete rip off of animated classic Voltron. Man...I wish I had that as a DVD set. It will definetly be a Throwback in the future.
