Rules to Live By...

....when you only have four days to live. Recently Tim, the writer over at oneplusinfinity was told by a Bum on the street that he would die before his next bday. This is what her wrote. Good blog, so it would be a shame if he really did die.

RELATIONSHIPS
- treat your partner like a rocket ship. Get inside her and take her to heavens and back.
- Love has nothing to do with looks, but everything to do with time, trust, and interest.
- Love is a 4-letter word
- falling in love is hard on the knees
FRIENDSHIP
- caring about someone, doesn’t mean they care back
- have some ones back no matter what.
HAPPINESS
- high school is not the best years of your life
- It’s the simple things in life that are the most extraordinary
- whiskey wednesday is the best thing ever
- always have a great pair of socks on
- name you appliances/furniture it will give them life. or make you crazy
LIFE SKILLS
- Never say never, and never say always.
- if your going to burn a bridge, pour it with gas and set it a blaze and don’t look back.
- Never discuss religion or politics at the dinner table
- Being an adult can be fun when you are acting like a kid
- Trust your gut
- be a little strange, the world will look better
- freckles are not fly shit
- its ok to be scared, but don’t let that fear control you.
- always look at both sides of the metal.
FOOD
- try everything once.
- cook for other people

DRINK
- find your drink and stick with it.
- know your limits
- any day that ends is a Y is a good day to drink whiskey
FASHION
- it’s ok to wear pink
- own more than one pair of shoes. You should have a couple pairs of black shoes, one pair of brown and about 140 sneakers
MONEY
- does not make you happy
- cant take it with you when you die
- never tell some one how much you make, youll sound like an ass
WORK
- “Difficult” takes a day. “Impossible” takes a week.
- Don’t let awards control your life. Don’t get a big ego. But awards are necessary
- no job is below you.
- Your reputation is more important than your paycheck, and your integrity is worth more than your career.
- Learn the Rules and Then break them
- don’t open your mouth until you know the shot.

Life lessons people. I especially concur on chewing with your mouth open, and drinking whispey all day everyday. Oh and the socks. You must have the socks.

Kids of yester-year.

"When I try and objectively compare kids nowadays and kids form my era a bit later and a lot before, I see that in comparison kids from today may be cute, but they’re wanting. They have less drive, aren’t as creative and although they’re smarter, they’re not so adept at having fun as children from past generations.

Baseline, if you look at what makes a kid a kid, then you can put up a list like this one:

THINGS THAT MAKE A KID A KID

1. Toys that went with you everywhere
2. A body made of 23% sugar
3. Playing outside
4. Imagining a jungle gym was a spaceship
5. A moldy granny you were forced to kiss on the cheek even if she smelled like cabbage and moth balls
6. A relative that gave you awesome toys every Christmas that would annoy your parents to no end
7. Velcro sneakers
8. An inability to color coordinate your clothing, what we insisted was our style
9. A squeaky voice we swore was a lot deeper than what we heard on video
10. Saturday Morning Cartoons"

....I also remember my imagination taking me to places unknown to man. That wasn’t a jungle gym. It was a fucking spaceship and a sweet one at that. That wasn’t a slide; it was the unstairway to the underworld. It wasn’t a stick, it was a samurai sword. "

Joker over at WAS
wrote a really enteraining (albeit true as all hell) post about what made kids, kids back in the day...as oppose to the mindless video game rompers of today. Imagination, knee scabs, sugar, saturday morning cartoon schedule and grandma love. Check it out. It'll take you back....atleast for 5 minutes.

Type Nerd? There's an App for that,

"Massively Overrated, a two-man development shop in Denver with a great name, has just released the official iPhone app for the popular and ridiculously addictive Typewar web game. If you haven't played it, Typewar is like World of Warcraft meets flash cards. You're shown a single letter and two buttons, each with the name of a font. Select the correct font and gain points, level up, unlock new typefaces, and compete with the rest of the Typewar community for the number one position. Enjoy, nerds."

I woul say, I want this....but I would need an iphone first. I cant think of a better way to waste time during commute. But I can still do it during lunch. So all is good.

BTW, ummmm....I'm gonna guess Didot, right?

Keyword: Awkward.

This blog is freakin hysterical. If anyone knows the woes of having to search through buckets and buckets of stock imagery.....you know that you have the potential to be witness to a range of photography: from the mundane to the absurd. So Awkward Stock Photos put themselves in charge of collecting and distributing the ones that really take the cake. You know....after you've been through like 30 pages (100 images a pager) and you see utterly ridic sh*t and it doesn't even phase you because your mind is numb? Well....they have it. Or should I say had. The site was shut down today. Still a good selection thus far despite their bitterness. Here are a few....

Casting.

Sleepy Hollow

Sister Act
Gia

Charlie's Angels
The Virgin Suicides

"You know when a movie has a flashback and you see the character as a kid? Sometimes that's awesome."
-Kid Casting

The funny part about this (to me), is that I just saw The Virgin Suicides for the first time yesterday- 11 years after the fact. And I thought to myself, "That's a cool job to have." Sometimes movie kid casting is totally on, and other times you're like, "who the f*ck is that suppose to be?"

But you still get paid. And that's what really matters.

Tune In: Race in Advertising.

Bill Green from Make the Logo Bigger and Angela Natividad of Adrants and MarketingVOX fame recently posted their first installment of AdVerve, which is actually a two-part epic discussion of racism in advertising with author Hadji Williams.

Check it out. Part 1, Part2.

Pretty interesting discussion. Kudos for taking on a big issue so well.

Two Years in Counting.

So…yesterday marked the 2 year anniversary of this blogging thing I have been doing. So in honor of that I just want to take a minute to describe the birth of Prostituted Thoughts. Cause at the very least…I owe this blog that.

Sept 27 2007 is when I started my blogging career. It started out as something a lot different. I was in portfolio school in Chicago. I worked during the day to pay bills, and I went to school at night. Now, I always joke that I have done every menial career known to man, but in Chicago I was running Office Services at a trading firm, which if you are not aware, that is code for “everybody else’s bitch.” I did everything from reloading the coffee machines every morning (cause a trader without coffee is just some dangerous sh*t in general) to fixing copier machines to watching the employees kids on “bring your kid to work and drop him off with the Office Services Guy” day. It was…well, it wasn’t ideal for someone who decided to commit to doing creative work for the rest of his life. So this blog was basically, my sounding board for that point in my life. A place I could go to and write about anything-literally. I mean, if you look back at the early years- there was no point to this blog really. It was scattered brained. It was very personal. Lacked writing style…design style. It was really ridiculous on purpose, because my life was just that far away from it. I wasn’t doing what I liked. And like, everything I didn’t do. It was a hot mess. But it was my hot mess- a mess of daily relief.

Perhaps some examples will clarify...

I know what you thinking…."this sh*t is still unorganized.” And you get a gold star for being right. Believe it or not…it’s on purpose. I got my first Junior AD job in NY and I brought my hot mess baby with me. I discovered that there really is an art to writing a blog. And a responsibility. I mean…if you are going forward on the path you choose and allegedly growing as an individual, it makes sense that you take you work with you on that journey. In my opinion, everything you do in life should be on par or above the level you are. So with my growth and accomplishment, I tried to evolve this baby. Life is bigger than my personal opinion. But if your blog is not without your personal opinion or touch….what is it exactly? So I decided to find a healthy balance between the 2. Can I write on this thing daily…in an organized fashion and have it still peak my interest? When I delved into that thought, I realized that there was a reason I wrote like I did back in Chicago. I was all over the place because that’s how I am as an individual. I mean….that’s why I picked this career after all. It allows me to look at 10 thousand things a day and use it to my advantage to make other things. I find everything intrinsically interesting. And I’ve never met a person I didn’t learn anything from. However, there is a limit. I like to land gently on the foaming head of multiple crisp ideas and ways of thinking daily, and then choose which frothy thought I want to delve into more deeply. Oh yeah, and I do have an opinion about it. But I try (maybe sometimes not hard enough) to stay neutral. But it’s that scatter brain mentality that makes me who I am as an individual and a creative person.

And hence….Prostituted Thoughts. The blog about everything, but really about nothing in particular. It’s a selfish endeavor really. On one end, I present you with ideas and thoughts for learning and entertainment purposes. But on the other end…I get to look all this crap up and feed it to you. It’s a deadly cycle, really. You [the reader], keep me updated and sane. I need all this randomness for motivation and you need it….well, I’m not sure why you need it. Just remember…you do.

Ok., this was longer than I wanted it to be. And I apologize for that. Let’s wrap it up. In conclusion….I just want to thank all you readers. It’s one thing to f*ckin ramble one and on about nothing on the internet daily. But it’s a completely different thing to matter. That’s why I was having a new header break down last week. There really was a new era on it’s way. Let's hope there are no dramatic changes.

***Fingers crossed***

-FIN, now back to your regularly scheduled programs...

OK, I'm having a header breakdown.

New Era coming soon.

9.17.2009

Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes.

Say goodbye to the old header. And "hi" to the new one. You likey???? Bringing in a new era
Warning: I may be playing around with the background color and the typeface for quiet some time.

9.04.2009

But whenever I entertain the notion of quitting this thing, I end up going back to why I started blogging to begin with. I need to create, maybe bounce stuff off of others. (The whole "conversation" thing.) Its likely because my job, like many of yours, is a maddening exercise in kissing ass and shutting up, keeping a sharp eye peeled for the next bus someone wants to throw us under. We blog to vent, to entertain ourselves and maybe a few others, and to do the things we want to do that advertising and marketing won't ever allow. Nobody promised us a work-life that satisfied. That's why they call it work. We get a paycheck. We try to do our best. We can't forget that while we may have entered the "creative" side for loftier reasons, we aren't here to make art, but to make a living. Could my blogging time be used in a more productively creative way, like maybe woodworking or learning a new language? Absolutely. And I might just start building Spanish Adirondack chairs someday.

How You See my Blog (???).

Much like thedailyobsessional, I don't really get how this MIT thing analyzes how the rest of the Internet sees you. And where as I am just as confused about the legal vs illegal sections of my blog , Im a graduate of the New England education system. The kids at MIT are f*ckin weird. So...they produced it and we have to live with not quiet understanding it, but trying to use it anyway.

Also....they have a really unattractive campus. Go ahead try it out for yourself.

My First Dictionary.

Blog...My First Dictionary, gets to the heart of the problem: CHILD EDUCATION. If only more blogs were as focused. Words. Visuals. And Usage. No child, will be left behind. A few examples, below.

Thank You For Things.

So I got a new blog for you guys. Things I'm Thank You For. It's airy. It's light. And it's unstoppable. Unlike this blog, all of it's post are completely original from content to aesthetic. It's what I like to call light-deep reading. And it's written by a designer/art director (designer first) that I actually know. Above all...it's always good to have a new blog to pimp out.

If it's too designer-y and completely above your head....that's ok too. Check him on the blog roll.

The War on Terror.

"Legofesto is a politics-junkie and news-hound, with a obsession for lego and other construction toys. This is not a blog for children. She is very, very pissed off about how this War on Terror is being prosecuted by US/UK, led by the deluded fundamentalists George Bush, Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld and George's ever faithful lapdog, Tony Blair and the cabal of supine stuffed shirts he calls a Cabinet, with their dearth of humanity and love of war. Real events in the world are recreated in lego. LEGO© in no way endorse this blog or the images within."

A toy blog devoted to the war on terror. Check here, for entertainment value. Though the "obsession for legos" sends up a red flag...

Without Advertising.

Without Advertising...I was actually just telling my mother yesterday that it was her fault that I am all into advertising. Otherwise...I probably would've done what every other person does...be a lawyer.

5.06.2009

The Linkdown.

1. Finally. The Crack App. Models around the world are confused.

2. I just dont know who to believe anymore.

4.Old men fighting! You must watch it....it's hysterical.

5. Giselle poses with black guys. Interracial porn?

6. Afghanistan doesn't really understand Swine Flu. But then again...neither do we.

7. DISNEY mind blowing....starts here.

9. Poor Jon & Kate. What did Kate think was going to happen? She's a B*tch.
