you can be african too.

while racialicous debates the cultural appropriation of American Apparels new line Afrika, I will be the first to outright say that it is simply culturally insensitive. It's not racist

Lets face it...it's made by hipsters for hipsters- FHBH if you will.
Hipsters...a demographic that prides itself on not conforming and being as obtuse as possible.  In general, they are not necessarily the most a tuned of demographics, when it comes to being "politically correct" or "culturally cognoscente." The only united front they do have is against corporate culture. Hipsters usually dont give a f*ck.  If their jeans are tight enough and their babies are tucked away safely in home made baby slings, and Williamsburgh doesn't burn to the ground...hipster could careless what you think about them wearing what it is they are wearing and why.

The thing is...cultural insensitivity can be more hurtful than racism itself. It is ignorance in the plainest of forms. Want an example...cultural insensitivity is an American anchor at the Olympic Opening Ceremony calling the traditional garb of a foreign country, a costume. It's unknowing. It's innocent. And it festers and grows within cultures and becomes natural. Cultural insensitivity hides behind the mask of acceptance. It's a Caucasian person saying "my ni**a" or calling someone else "darkness." It's ignoring the past and history behind a group of people and pushing for the future. But it's a catch 22...while its great to look forward, you can never forget to look back.

So...I don't have a definitive answere to whether people should consider this or not. I'm not African, so I personally am not offended. I also will not be wearing anything close to African garb anytime soon. But...that arab (i know it's not) scarf trend is still around, so I'm assuming this could catch on.

I don't really have an answer here...I guess I just wish that people (you the reader) were more culturally aware. That's it.

i hope that line doesn't catch on... that shit is ugly.

I'm all for "western-african" (or african-western) clothing. You see a lot of this in the caribbean fashion world: clothing inspired by traditional african clothing but its usually not so blatant and executed better IMO (the menswear is another matter tho).
