So, here's a little truth about being an art director/designer, for those of you who are not in the industry yet. No one will make your stuff for you. So when it comes down to the wire....you should be expecting to do whatever it takes to get your shit done. Cause in the end...if there is nothing to look at, it's not done.
I bet you guys thought I forgot about this series (almost did). But alas, I never break my promises. On the last episode of Cartoon/Smartoon I touched on The Best Cartoons that No One Knows About. There will be a part 2, but I figured I would get this highly known and highly anticipated group of cartoons out of the way. You knew it was coming....let's talk about Disney Afternoon. Bring on the talking animals.
The Disney Afternoon definitely took up if not all, then a great portion of my childhood. I use to prey for every sickness from pneumonia to chicken pox (which Ive never had) so that I could stay home and at 3pm, witness yet another life changing 2 hours of tv time. Full disclosure....at 3pm on the dot a certain show came on, inwhich the theme song was so off the charts, ridiculously good and magically tropical (no homo) that it may or may not have made me jump up and down on my bed dancing like one of those kids from a early 90s movie on the WB on a Sunday afternoon...
Ok, but lets get started.
Tale Spin- You guessed it. This was that tropical beat that I may or may not have danced to in the privacy of my own home. Talking Bears. Pirates. You know you wanted to be Kit and fly on that buggy board behind the plane. I'm kinda a punk about extreme sports....but if I say, where given it as a bday gift...I would probably tear up the sky line.
Chip N Dale- Rats, Mice and Chip Munks come together to solves crimes. Oh yeah...and Zipper the fly. Once, when I was killing flys as a kid...I was successful. And then I cried...cause i thought I killed Zipper. My mom still tells that story to people. Sad, but cute right?
Darkwing Duck- Ummm, pure creativity. That's all I have to say about this cartoon.
Goof Troops- Ok, not a necessity in life, but still...a good show. The funny part was that it really wasn't my favorite Disney cartoon, yet I dare you to guess how many times I have seen the Goof Troop movie. I may have even made my dad take me to the theater. I also may have had the segaGenesis game. What? I was a gullible primary adapter back then.
Gummi Bears- I'm not even sure if I can describe how deep this show took me into a world of fantasy, make believe and magic. I mean...it came to a point where I had to make a decision to reemerge from the realm of magic, bouncy juice, dragons and talking....well, talking anything. Everything and anything had the ability to talk, walk and entertain. Possibilities were endless. My poor mind.
Duck Tales- classic. Morality. Education. Entertainment. I mean....it kinda doesn't get better than that. Can it?
Other honorable mentions: Bonkers, Alladin (the series) and The Little Mermaid (the series). Bonkers didn't quiet float my boat and I think the reason was, that I was never quiet sure what he/it was. Was it a Bobcat or an orange monkey? And as strange as it sounds, my kid mind needed a premise of some sort. And that premise was...if I am to believe that this thing can talk and have a life, I need to know it's Binomial nomenclature.
But by far, one of my favorite Disney Afternoon cartoons ever was Gargoyles. Besides not helping with the mental battle I was having separating the real world with the magical/mythical one, this show had a plot line that could rivaled any show or movie written today. It was sooooo deep. I watched every episode in every season at least 4 times, and there were references to events that happen in seasons prior. There was love (conventional and unconventional), hate, eternal damnation, robots, parallel universes, explosions, an arch nemesis (life lesson: it's vital to know how to distinguish the difference between regular enemies and arch enemies) ....you name it, this show had it. Gargoyles that were casted in stone hundreds of years ago only to reemerge in modern day and continue their battle against evil and mankind. Come on! How could that not entice you?
Even today.
So that's it. Disney ruled the big screen back in the day. And it ruled the small screen from 3 to 5pm every weekday. I know for a fact that I can blame Disney Afternoon for the robust imagination I have today. And I thank them for that. I can also thank them for the fact that one day I expect for an animal to just start talking to me. And you know what? I am ready for it.
On Tuesday night begged my roommate to go out with me to this open bar i was invited to. First, only the best parties happen on the weekdays (not including Friday). Second, no one ever wants to go out with me on a week night because of their job the next morning. Third, it is so hard to find a place that's hosting an openbar for 2+ hours anywhere in this city. Fourth, its top shelf liquor (im not going to an open Smirnoff bar!). Fifth, this place is too exclusive, so i had to go.
So i got sick! hahahha... and i even went to work, but.... had to leave early cause i was too ill. so finally last night around 11 i remembered that it was humpday. Now that i think about it, its funny cause yesterday was humpday and i was humped over yaking. (LOL... gross, i know)
Today is Throwback Humpday Thursday. tunes that they used to hump to yesteryear.
1. I FUCKIN LOVE THIS SONG!!!!! reminds me of one time back in chicago at a karaoke bar. I put on a great performance. wireless mic= more room to roam around the bar. 2. DUH... of course. 3. I'm introducing a new series called Where, Who They Are Now. I think I have done this before calling it blast from the past...but this time it's different. I think. Anyway, It will not be a regular as it takes far too much research and I don't really like writing about gossip, but it will be posted on Throwback Thursdays. And it will focus on reuniting you with the famous people of your past and dually quench the inner thirst I have for keeping up with nostalgic figures of my past. It's like a talk show when you don't expect to be reunited with that girl you made out with in Cancun 9 months ago, minus the whole "I have herpes, you may want to get checked," and the audience, and a paternity test. It will be fun. I promise.
Ok....let's get started:
This face is unmistakable. Mr. Eddie Winslow, the good natured adolescence older brother from Family Matters. Since his endearing role as a nerd loving rambunctious teen Eddie has stared in numerous made for BET movies and he was the voice for Jazz in Transformers (???) Most notably however, he was involved in a scandal...well, more like an embarrassment with the likes of a woman whom the Hip Hop Industry calls SupaHead (trade marked). It involved anal beads and Eddie trying to kill her, allegedly. One would think that the star of a show about family values would know better!
Home Improvement "Stars" Tim Allen and....., reunited recently to win some type of award. Oh wait, Jonathan was not there. Apparently there was some type of family drama. What Are they doing now? Who cares, I have some questions of my own. How do I keep my youngest son (on TV or off) from growing up all dorky looking like the kid one in from the left? Who is the hottie all the way to the right? And where is that old guy who lived next door? I still want to see his face.
Guess who? You probably know...but as a hint...she use to call her boy friends bud. Now she is busy, puttin it down in the club. Certified banger.
the only reason why you read this blog is here. hahah i kid. 1. this is a great song. i love singing this one. 2. ya know how almost everyones table dancing song is pour some sugar on me? well this i my "pour some sugar on me"
bonus: try laying over the peggy lee vocals over the erotic city music= GREATNESS.
oh yea and one time i was at a concert, one of those winter jams the radio stations (in this case KIIS Los Ange) do, that all the teeny boppers and young ones go to. K-Ci and JoJo were performing (this was the time when they had that one hit song in the late late 90's after jodeci). Well jojo got really into his performance was feenin on stage and pulled down his pants, revealing his dick. then all the mothers grabbed their kids and ran out the shrine auditorium... i was like what do you expect? I expected that. if your pants are already that low and you got some huMpable music playing then those pants are gonna eventually be on the ground. Okay!
I would like to introduce to you my avid reader, a new series that will only run on Throwback Thursdays: Cartoon/Smartoon.
It is my personal belief that the cartoons back in the day were not only better written than the crap they show to our youth today, but they were smarter. Anthropomorphized sponges and spikey haired card carrying dragon fighters...these are the "cartoons" that run the airwaves today. When I see my little godson watch TV, I see the tv happening to him (not the other way around). What happened to tales of wonder and laughter? The shows that sponsored creativity? The plots that forced your imagination out of its dormant cave and made you wonder where, how and why...and most of all MAYBE. I miss that.
In this edition, I will be showing you the toons that I loved...but can't seem to find others who can honestly share that love with. When I get into one of my nostalgic, drinking on an empty stomach rants about "how I will raise my seed on old cartoons, and they will be better people," I reference the well known: Thundercats, ScoobyDoo and The Animaniacs. No, animals cannot talk...but damn-it, I learned something when I watched these show. I speakof the semi-memorable ones like the Centurions, The Littl' Bits and Wayne Head. But these are the toughs one (that I liked):
Street Sharks- Besides the completely awesome theme song that makes me want to rock out with my c*ck out, the concept...walking shark men that bite through anything and everything. Come one....you can't, not like that.
Mighty Max-Ummmm, talking fowl as a friend.
The Wild C.A.T.S.- On Cartoon Express, back when USA was cool.
Dinosaucers- I loved this show...point blank.
Samurai Pizza Cats- I mean...this came on at 2pm, right before the rush of Disney cartoons. I don't even try to bring this up to people. Because its just bizarre. And it wasn't until recently that I knew I was not crazy (robot pizza delivering japanese cats....).
The Noozles- For some odd reason, I always bring this show up during my nostalgic banter. Then I explain that it had to do with stuffed Kualas that came to life when their noses were rubbed and then sucked the main character through a worm whole into a magical world.
The Mutant League- Ok, so these mutants play human sport. Except the sport was extra dangerous. So people lost limbs and die all the time. Come on....this is made for the boy's-boy (kid version of man's-man).
The Herculoids & Co.- This was a late night cartoon. It came on at like 2am on Cartoon Network. And I just felt cool and grown up watching it alongside Birdman, Young Samson, The Galaxy Trio.
Oh there are more....I just wanted to wet your whistle a little bit. I don't want to overwhelm you. There will be multiple editions. And many extensions. BE....excited!! BE...BE....excited! This series is going to be....the BOMB.
ok, I admit it...some series ideas have been abandoned (im no writer, ok)....but I figured I would finish up myOlympic ad series. Make sure you catch the finale...its like totally to die for.
